Chapter 8 - A Change comes over Bilbo

Bilbo's experience with the spiders of Mirkwood brings about a change in his character. What happens to change him? Describe the effect that this change has on Bilbo. What do you think we can expect from Bilbo in the future?

Chapter 7 - Change your Skin

In this chapter we meet a character named Beorn whom Gandalf says is a skin-changer. "Sometimes he is a huge black bear, sometimes he is a great strong black-haired man with huge arms and a great beard." Have you ever wished you could change your skin? If you could change into some other creature what would it be? Why? (Be descriptive in your answer.)

A Riddle in the Dark

Bilbo and Gollum engage in a contest of wits asking each other a number of clever riddles. One example is the following:

Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.

Bilbo guesses correctly that the answer is the wind. Can you write your own riddle that either Gollum or Bilbo may have asked if the contest had gone on longer? Don't provide the answer, wait a few days to see if someone else can guess it correctly, then log back on and give us the answer.

The journey is now well on its way for Bilbo and the Dwarves. Now put yourself in Bilbo's position. How would you have reacted if Gandalf and the dwarves had shown up at your house and invited you on their adventure? Why would you make that choice?

As Bilbo plods along in the cold and the wet he thinks to himself, "I wish I was at home in my nice hole by the fire, with the kettle just beginning to sing!"
